In the small American town of Woodsboro, California, a psychotic masked killer with a love of horror movies murders teenager Casey Becker (Drew Barrymore). As a media circus descends on the town, the killer begins terrorising Casey's high school classmate, Sidney Prescott (Campbell), whose mother was murdered a year earlier.

When Sidney encounters the stalker and escapes, her boyfriend Billy (Skeet Ulrich) is arrested on suspicion of murder. However, the phone calls and killings continue, so Sidney and her friends consult the rules of horror films as they try to unmask the killer before they strike again.
