In modern-day California, psychotherapist Catherine Deane (Jennifer Lopez) experiments with a new technique which allows her to enter the minds of catatonic patients via drugs and a cybernetic suit. When serial killer Carl Stargher (Vincent D'Onofrio) lapses into a coma after being apprehended by the FBI, Deane enters his mind in order to discover the location of the hidden cell which is known to contain Stargher's last victim, who is still alive but in danger of drowning. However, Stargher's sadistic fantasies start to become real to Deane, and FBI agent Peter Novak (Vince Vaughn) is forced to follow her in and rescue her before she becomes trapped in Stargher's consciousness.
