Seeking to revitalise the Chinese fantasy genre, legendary producer Tsui Hark assembled director Ching Siu-Tung, screenwriter Yuen Kai-Chi and stars Leslie Cheung, Joey Wong and Wu Ma for A Chinese Ghost Story. The film conquered the 1987 Hong Kong box office, spawned two sequels and became a landmark of Hong Kong fantasy cinema, combining supernatural romance, martial arts, comedy and spectacular visual effects.

A Chinese Ghost Story (1987)
The timid yet earnest Ling Choi-San (Leslie Cheung) takes shelter for the night in an abandoned temple, where he meets and falls in love with the beautiful Nip Siu-Sihn (Joey Wong). When he discovers she is a ghost forced to lure men to their deaths by an evil tree demon, Ling enlists the help of rambunctious Taoist warrior Yin Chik-Ha (Wu Ma) in a desperate attempt to free her.

A Chinese Ghost Story II (1990)
Ling Choi-San returns and becomes caught up with a group of rebels fighting to rescue their captured leader while battling sinister supernatural forces. Once again aided by Yin Chik-Ha, Ling also crosses paths with the formidable and slightly mad swordsman Jihau (Jacky Cheung) as the action, fantasy and otherworldly chaos escalate.

A Chinese Ghost Story III (1991)
Set 100 years after the previous film, the final instalment follows Fong (Tony Leung Chiu-Wai), a bumbling young monk tasked with transporting a golden statue of Buddha to a neighbouring county. His journey leads him into the lair of the first film's terrifying tree demon and its ghostly servants, bringing the trilogy full circle for one final supernatural adventure.

Together, The Chinese Ghost Story Trilogy represents Hong Kong fantasy cinema at its most imaginative, combining spectacular special effects, breathtaking fight choreography and sumptuous cinematography with otherworldly horror, energetic comedy and sweeping romance.
