Strictly Ballroom (1992)
Luhrmann's debut, and still one of the great Australian crowd-pleasers. Championship dancer Scott Hastings (Paul Mercurio) throws away his shot at the Pan-Pacific Grand Prix by dancing his own steps, then partners with beginner Fran (Tara Morice) to do it properly. Funny, sincere and impossible to sit still through.

Romeo + Juliet (1996)
Shakespeare's text, transplanted to the neon chaos of Verona Beach. Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes head a cast of feuding crime families in a version that hits like a music video and lands like a tragedy. The film that made Shakespeare a box office draw for a new generation.

Moulin Rouge! (2001)
Paris, 1899. A penniless writer (Ewan McGregor) falls for the star of the city's most notorious nightclub (Nicole Kidman) in a jukebox musical stitched from pop songs and pure spectacle. Winner of two Academy Awards and the film that revived the modern movie musical.

Australia (2008)
Kidman returns opposite Hugh Jackman in a sweeping epic set against the cattle stations of the Northern Territory and the bombing of Darwin. Big country, big romance, big canvas.
